Laos’ vovinam team eyes greater glory at 2023 SEA Games
Laos’ star vovinam martial artists will bolster their training regime in the hope of building on their success at the just-ended SEA Games by picking up more medals at the next edition of the games in Cambodia next year.
The Lao team won two gold medals at the 31st SEA Games in Vietnam last week.
They arrived at Wattay International Airport in Vientiane on Tuesday where they were welcomed by senior officials from the Ministry of Education and Sports and members of the public.
The team’s coach Mr Viengsouk Hangngeun said the group will be ready for the games in Cambodia in 2023, while Thailand will host the next edition in 2025.
The SEA Games in Vietnam involved 15 vovinam events.
Vietnam won six of the gold medals up for grabs in the discipline, while Myanmar won three, Cambodia three, and Laos two gold medals.
Mr Viengsouk said he thought more Asian countries would include vovinam at future editions of the SEA Games.
Indonesia will host the 34th SEA Games in 2027 and Laos will host the 35th edition in 2029.
Laos first hosted the SEA Games in 2009.
Unfortunately, the martial art will not feature at the 11th National Games taking place in Xieng Khuang province in December.
